Bowen Therapy

What is Bowen Therapy?

The Bowen Technique is a specific series of muscle and connective tissue movements designed to treat a wide range of problems and injuries. It addresses every system in the body, internal organ systems as well as the musculoskeletal structure. These gentle, powerful moves send neurological impulses to the brain, which then is given time to process and feed impulses back to realign the body. Respecting this feedback loop is essential for allowing the body to restore its own natural balance. So you will find that during a bowen treatment the practitioner will step away from you for approximately 2 – 5 mins to allow the energy to flow through the respective meridian pathways, then return to apply further moves.
There is no forceful manipulation, just a light cross-fibre manoeuvring of a muscle, tendon or ligament, a pleasant feeling to receive.

Bowen assists in tapping into the body’s natural feedback system that monitors the state of each muscle. Therefore releasing tension within the muscles. Our body’s cells hold memories of events including sites of injuries. Bowen assists in removing any energy blocks due to emotional issues, which are often accumulated in the physical body causing tension, pain and dis-ease. Bowen technique provides a powerful stimulus to the circulation in the joints. The muscles attached around the joint will be relaxed, thus taking pressure off the joint and encourage healing.

Bowen Therapy is NOT a massage treatment.  It does not require oil or removing of clothes.  Many people have miss understood the differences between Bowen therapy and massage.

What Does Bowen Therapy Feel Like?

In majority of cases most people are so relaxed they can fall asleep since there is no hard or vigorous moves or pressure with bowen.

This treatment is unique in that it can be received fully clothed, given to new born babies, aged and frail, acute injuries as well as chronic disorders, with rarely any discomfort experienced. If there is a highly inflamed area then there maybe a small amount of discomfort but this will free up after one application whilst the bodies energy is released whereby the second treatment can be experienced without discomfort.

Here I am working along the spine.
Bowen can be executed over loose clothing quite successfully.

What Can Bowen Therapy Be Used For?

Bowen is excellent for the work environment due to be received fully clothed and can assist in prevention or treatment of RSI and back/neck strain/injuries that often occur in the workplace.

How Will I feel After a Bowen Treatment?

Bowen assists in the complete restoration of the structural integrity of the body. You will achieve an improvement in posture, lymphatic and venous drainage along with arterial blood flow.  You will also experience a very relaxed feeling, and most people enjoy a wonderful nights sleep after a Bowen Treatment. Your body will feel freer and more aligned.

The Bowen treatment will continue to be integrated in the body over the next five days.

Unlike Osteopathic or Chiropractic which are both manipulative – Bowen is non manipulative and thereby allows the body to draw upon its own innate intelligence to heal without force. The same health issues and injuries can be treated with Bowen as with the other therapies mentioned here obtaining excellent results without force.

Depending on each unique situation everyone is encouraged to receive a follow up treatment one week later. With injuries sometimes they are weekly, this could be from 3-6 weeks depending on each situation, or fortnightly visits are recommended after the 2nd treatment until resolved. Positive results are often achieved in a short space of time and people often return for maintenance treatments once every 4-6 weeks.

Treatments are always offered and included with every Naturopathic consult depending on duration of consult - experience benefits of always receiving a treatment with your Naturopathic consult.

I believe it is very important to treat the body (often with Bowen therapy) in conjunction with all Naturopathic consults.  Over time I have observed how this speeds up healing and helps free up chi energy in the body.
